Terms of Use & Privacy

Beta software

Second Nature is a work in progress, built and maintained by one person. Tools and games may change, break, or disappear without notice. Scores, setlists, and preferences are stored in your browser and can be wiped by a browser update, a privacy setting, clearing your history, or a change to the site itself. Nothing here should be treated as permanent storage.

Ownership

Everything on this site — the code, the practice tools, the arcade games, the writing, the visual design, and the Second Nature name and logo — is the original work of Nathan Cook, except for the third-party components credited under Credits below.

Trademark

“Second Nature” and the associated logo are used as the brand for this project. Use of this name or logo to represent a different product or service, without permission, is not allowed.

Credits

A few tools on this site use third-party assets, credited here as their licenses require:

  • The spoken count-in voice (Metronome, Hit the Beat) uses audio from the LibriTTS corpus, licensed CC BY 4.0. Attribution: LibriTTS corpus, used under CC BY 4.0.
  • The percussion click sounds are CC0 (public domain) recordings by Ludwig Peter Mueller. No attribution is required, but it's given here as thanks.
  • Fonts (Press Start 2P, Chakra Petch, DM Sans, DM Mono, Titan One) are served via Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License.

Privacy

This site has no accounts, no logins, and no analytics. It does not run its own server that stores anything about you.

Stored in your browser. Scores, high-score initials, practice streaks, setlists, instrument and difficulty choices, sound on/off, and your light/dark theme preference are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. None of it is transmitted anywhere. Clearing your browser data deletes all of it permanently.

Audio files you choose. Where a tool lets you load your own audio file, that file is read directly in your browser and never uploaded — there is no server to send it to. On the Play Along page files are also saved on your own device, in your browser's storage, so a set of songs is still there next time. They stay on that device and are never transmitted anywhere; removing one from the list, or clearing your browser data, deletes it.

Third parties that see your visit. Loading a page contacts a small number of outside services, which can see your IP address and basic browser information: Google Fonts serves the typefaces on every page, Cloudflare hosts and delivers this site, and YouTube is contacted on the Carry the Tune and Play Along pages, and only once you load a track there. Google's handling of what it receives is described in the Google Privacy Policy.

YouTube playback

Two pages can play songs using YouTube's official embedded player: Carry the Tune and Play Along. You supply the link; the video is streamed from YouTube and is never downloaded, recorded, copied, or stored by this site. The player is left visible and fully interactive at all times, and this site does not capture your microphone or record you singing.

By using Carry the Tune, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Information collected by YouTube through the embedded player is handled under the Google Privacy Policy.

When the page loads a video, the YouTube player collects and shares basic information with YouTube — including your IP address and cookie data — in order to display the thumbnail and title, determine whether the video can be played, and detect fraud and abuse. This begins as soon as the player loads, before you press play. More is collected once playback starts. None of it is sent to, seen by, or stored by Second Nature; it goes directly from your browser to YouTube. If you would rather not share anything with YouTube, don't load a video — nothing is requested from YouTube until you do, and every other tool and game on this site works without it.

You are responsible for the links you paste. Only use these features with videos you're entitled to watch, and don't use it to work around region blocks, age restrictions, or an uploader's decision to disable embedding.

YouTube is a trademark of Google LLC. Second Nature is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google or YouTube.

What you can and can't do

You're welcome to use the tools and games on this site for your own personal practice, for free. You may not:

  • Copy, rehost, or redistribute the code, tools, or games from this site elsewhere
  • Scrape, mirror, or bulk-download the site's content
  • Resell, sublicense, or repackage any part of this site as your own product
  • Use the audio samples, artwork, or other assets from this site outside of it
  • Use the Second Nature name, logo, or branding for another project without permission

If you'd like to use something from this site in a way that isn't covered above, ask — use the feedback link in the footer of any page.

No warranty

These are practice tools, built and maintained by one person. They're provided as-is, with no warranty of any kind, and nothing on this site is professional, medical, or instructional advice beyond what it plainly appears to be: tools for practicing music. Use your own judgment, and don't rely on this site for anything where a mistake would matter beyond a practice session.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Nathan Cook is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising out of your use of this site — including lost scores, lost setlists, lost practice time, lost data, missed performances, or hearing discomfort from audio played at a volume you selected. You are responsible for your own listening volume, particularly when using headphones. Where liability cannot be excluded by law, it is limited to the amount you paid to use this site, which is zero. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations of liability, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Age

This site is not directed to children under 13, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from them. The tools themselves need no personal information to work. If you are under 13, please don't submit your name or email through the feedback form — and if you're a parent or teacher who believes a child has sent personal information through it, get in touch and it will be deleted.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of these terms or your use of this site will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Kent County, Michigan, and you agree to those courts having jurisdiction. Nothing in this section prevents either party from bringing a qualifying claim in small claims court.

Feedback form data

The feedback form on each page sends whatever you type (and your name/email if you choose to include them) directly to Nathan Cook's inbox by email, through a third-party form service (Web3Forms). Nothing you submit is stored on this website, sold, or shared with anyone else.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated as the site grows. The date at the top of this page reflects the last update. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
